The Amazon Kindle eReaders are a line of light-weight pocket-size ebook readers that start at only $79, if you take the Kindle sale price into account (see special offers). With the exception of the backlit “Fire” model, these eReaders use an e-ink screen that displays books as if you were actually reading on paper. The e-ink screens allow you to read in the sun and without eye strain. With access to free eBooks in libraries, and over one million books via online connection, of which over 800,000 cost $9.99 or less, eBooks are easily-accessible. And with the basic models at only six ounces and with a generous 6″ screen size, it’s remarkably powerful for an eReader you can carry around in your pocket.

Information About Kindle eReaders
Here’s some information about the Kindle eBook readers.
Advantages
There are a number of advantages to Kindle eReaders:
- Their e-ink display reads like paper when reading books or magazines, and is 100% legible in bright sunlight.
- A wide selection of books are available for download from Amazon.com and other online bookstores. You can download them directly to your eReader or to your computer for subsequent transfer. Books take only about 60 seconds to download over a Wi-Fi connection.
- You can borrow books from your local library’s website at absolutely no cost. You can also lend your purchased books to friends. Some Kindle models allow you to use them for email and work-related documents in formats such as PDF and Word.
- With the wifi turned off, the battery life on these devices range from one to three months which makes for great reading time without the need for recharging.
- Some Kindle models allow you to view instant streaming movies in full color.
- The Kindle eReader stores up to 1,400 books in memory.
Kindle Models
There are 7 different models of Kindle for sale: the Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Touch 3G, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Keyboard 3G, Kindle DX, and Kindle Fire. Depending on which one you prefer, they vary in size, content access, web display, and other unique features. The Fire totally maximizes the performance features so check it out especially if you like reading in color.
Disadvantages
- Most Kindle eReaders have an e-ink display, that mimics ink on paper. As a result, they are not backlit – which is an advantage with regards to eyestrain and when reading is bright conditions. However, you can’t read most Kindle models in the dark. In those situations you can purchase a light that will mount on the Kindle. The one exception to this is the Kindle Fire, which is basically a tablet and has a backlit screen rather than e-ink.
- I’ve found that there is sometimes a waiting list for eBooks that I wish to borrow from our public library. However, there is usually something available to keep me reading while I wait for my first choice to become available. This issue is common with all eReaders, not just the Kindle.
Alternatives
Kindle offers other models that might be better for you. If you want an eReader that is also a tablet, check the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Touch provides the same features as the basic Kindle with the addition of a touch screen. If you’re dead-set against purchasing a Kindle, you can go to the following web page to check out some excellent Nook Color deals.
Recommendation
There isn’t much to complain about when it comes to the Amazon Kindle eReaders. The Kindles are the premium eReaders on the market and the new, low price of the basic model brings a Kindle within reach of most people and makes it price-competitive with all other eReaders. There is a complete line of more expensive Kindles for sale with more extensive features (although, I just want to read books on my eReader, and the basic model is perfect for me).
I highly recommend the Amazon Kindle eReaders and the fact that there is currently a Kindle sale (the special offers can save you as much as 28%) makes them even more attractive.
